The interlock edition features two materials ‘woven’ in and out of each other, resulting in a striking pattern and an added dimension of beauty when Solstice is breathing in and our throughout the course of the day.

Solstice is a Kinetic Timepiece, that does a lot more than just tell the time. It turns time into a moving piece of art.

It ‘breathes’ in and out over a 12 hour period, gradually opening and closing like a flower. At midday, when the sun is highest in the sky the clock-face is at its largest. At 6pm when the sun has dropped lower in the sky, the clock-face is at its smallest.

Solstice has two modes: clock-mode and demo-mode. In clock-mode Solstice functions just like a clock, keeping time and completing one rotation every 12 hours. In demo-mode Solstice completes one rotation every minute, beautifully opening and closing in front of your eyes. Solstice continues to keep perfect time even if left in demo mode for days.

  • It wouldn't be possible to make Solstice without a cable, we have spent a lot of time looking into it. Solstice is nothing like a conventional clock, it has quite a powerful motor and a gearbox inside it, which is needed to open and close the flower-like mechanism. The power requirements mean that a battery is not possible, or if we did use a battery it would be very large/ need charging frequently!

One solution that previous customers for Solstice have used if they prefer to hide the cable - is to hide it inside the wall, much like a light fixture.

  • It is possible to tell the time without a minute hand, albeit a little less precisely! A sundial is an interesting historical example of a clock with only an hour hand. Solstice is less about precision and more about the playful expression of time.

Two silver dots mark each hour and a single dot marks a half hour. So it is possible to know the approximate time, such as 'almost 4' or 'just after 15.30', but not that it is exactly 14:04. We all have smartphones to check the time when we are running for a bus. Solstice is not so much about being constrained to a minute-precise clock, more about being liberated from it. Its about enjoying the passing of time and turning it into something meditative and beautiful.

The idea is that by living with a Solstice clock one can see the 'shape of time' on the clock face as a moving artwork. One will start to understand midday or the approach of midday even if the sky is overcast and full of clouds.

  • Solstice comes with an L-bracket which is fixed to the wall with two screws. (screws and wall plugs provided). Solstice then connects to this L-bracket using 2 bolts (bolts and allen key provided).
