Solaris is a coffee table combined with a moving 6 planet orrery (model of the solar system). It brings a sense of astronomical wonder to any space, allowing one to contemplate our position in the greater universe. Orreries (solar system models) are often considered relics of the past, found in museums of science, astronomy and clockmaking. They tell a simple story about where the earth sits in the solar system and are typically objects of great beauty.
Solaris is a re-invention of the orrery for a modern space. It is electrically powered rather than mechanically wound and is also a coffee table! Unlike typical Orreries Solaris employs magnets to move the planets, separating the planets in a seperate plane between a layer of glass and persex. This is to give some visual separation between the planetary orbits and the gearing below, allowing one to appreciate the beauty of each separately.
The sun and the first 6 planets are represented. A system of gears drives a series of arms, on the end of which is a magnet which moves a steel ball representing each planet. The table top is glass allowing one to look through the table and see all the inner workings below. There is a light strip around the edge of the table which can be independently switched on and off. Earth takes 1 minute to orbit and Saturn takes 30 minutes.
